There are a myriad of mistakes to be made when gardening. If you are convinced that you have a brown thumb, it may be just that you are doing a few things wrong with devastating results. These missteps can be avoided with a little foresight and education. If you weren't one of the ones who grew up in the country setting or under the tutelage of a grandmother who had the gift of growing things this article is for you. Below you will find a few of the most common mistakes and also how to avoid making them.

Mistake #1 Some people plant their plants way too close together. This is one of the biggest mistakes that you will find in home gardens. If the seed package or the nursery says they are to be spaced 18 inches apart it is for a reason. Just because the plant itself only has a few leaves you have to understand that roots need room to grow and overcrowding will keeping some plants from receiving the nutrients they need for proper growth. This results in stunted or lame looking plants.

Mistake #2 Unprepared or poor quality soil. Not doing a soil test is the second biggest mistake on our list. You can purchase test kits online and in nurseries and other garden stores. Knowing what type of soil you have will tell you two things. a) What plants will most likely grow in that type of soil and b) if you need to add fertilizers and other nutrient compounds to make it viable for plant growth?

Mistake #3 Not knowing what amount of sunlight is conducive to great plant growth is also one of the mistake gardeners are making quite often. This is as important to plant growth as watering. Before committing the plants to soil research them to find out what type of sunlight works best with each type of plant. Some flourish in direct sunlight but others could just as easily be killed by the same amount of sunlight.

Mistake # 4 Improper or over use of chemicals can also make a great garden a virtual impossibility. Over use of insecticides, fungicides and yes even the fertilizers can burn your plants. Carefully following the directions on the packages and carefully monitoring the use of these will help your garden grown green and strong.

Mistake #5 In all things when you fail to plan you plan to fail and gardening is one of those areas where a good plan can be the difference between a good garden and a great one. The plan should include the design of the garden plot, which plants will be planted in what space and also what the soil types in each area are.

In conclusion you must not let pride get in the way of asking for help. This is the mistake of a lot of otherwise intelligent people. It is no disgrace to ask for advice from someone who has more experience than you do on a given subject. Consider gracing your garden with beautiful garden statues and garden fountains to increase its charm and beauty.
