Most of us never consider the hurt as the living and breathing organism that it is. If the actions we take daily against the earth were made against a person we would all go to jail. Consider this, if you were walking down the street and spotted someone raping someone, you could be charged with failure to render aid. We stand by and watch this happen to the earth all the time. There are those that would like to say that this is thinking of an extremist but the truth of the matter is it is the just a fact.

The Earth is alive and we are its caretakers. As a caretaker there are certain things we can do to lessen the effects our negligence has caused. Below you will find a list of five things you are doing right now that is hurting the earth.

1. Wasting energy is one of the most hurtful things we are doing these days. It takes energy for us to enjoy our televisions, our heat and ac uses energy, water heaters and so on. Every time you turn your thermostat below 75 degrees you waste energy. Standing with the fridge open for 10-15 minutes wastes energy. Leaving the water running while you brush your teeth waste energy. The way the issue is being describes leads straight to the cure. Stop doing it.

2. Refuse is high on the list of things that we do everyday that is literally smothering this planet. A family of four can easily fill up 2-3 cans of trash each week. Sometimes even more. Most of the population has never had an occasion to visit a landfill. You should make an outing of it, to see just how much trash is being generated in your area. It will at least give you a hint at what the situation is like. Donate or resell items instead of tossing them out. Buy things that are biodegradable. Recycle everything you can.

3. Water is also a resource that is being wasted carelessly. How is this hurting the planet. The fresh water supply is not as resilient as you might think. We are loosing fresh water each year. Some to pollution and still others to the effects of being overused. Although water covers a big portion of the earth only a small percentage of it is fresh, and most of that is in glaciers and polar icecaps. Harvesting rain water in rain barrels and using it to water house plants and your lawn and garden will greatly reduce the amount of fresh water from the reservoirs that is being used. Consider using rain barrels for your garden if you want to conserve rain water and reuse it for gardening. While you are at it, to go a step further, replace your electric fountain with a beautiful solar fountain.

4. Buy produce that is grown locally. When we buy produce that has been trucked from the coastal states we are adding to the pollution levels. The amount if the carbon emissions from the trucks that haul the produce is adding to the already polluted atmosphere.

5. Using plastic bags to transport food and/or merchandise. These bags never go away, they are here to stay. Another man made item that is not biodegradable. These bags are responsible for clogged sewer lines, and they kill birds, fish and small animals.

Being detrimental to the planet we live on has become a way of life. It doesn't take millions of dollars to turn it around but a little effort on the part of all concerned and we can help the earth back to health.
