Thousands of online surveys have all come to the consensus that the industry veterans such as National, Avis and Hertz are among the best car rental companies in the world. So what is it about these 3 companies that leave the rest in a wake of dust? Is it that many are so used to their level of service and contract features that everyone else is merely a bad rental service? The answer is no. all of these companies employ different business models that are equally respected and revered as great for customers and clients. Identify a bad car rental service can save you hundreds of dollars and time (and your sanity) if ever you end up in a litigation process with them. In this article I look into a couple of these traits which will hopefully teach when to smile and walk away.
Unfortunately the hardest thing to fully test of a car rental company, without actually parting with you hard earned money, is the quality of customer service. Issues such as how the rental company treats their clients, what state their cars are in (cleanliness, road worthiness etc), availability of cars especially when booked in advance, cost and how easy to understand their policies and agreements are, all play a big role in judging whether they are a good car rental service company. The personal service should be great; make a point to ask as many questions as you can not only about the cars that are available but about the company itself watching out for how they interact with their clients.
Many conniving car rental services over charge their clients for insurance. A major car rental company, for example, was fined thousands of dollars for effectively conning its clients on insurance. Many of these types of car rental companies boost their sales by charging ridiculous figures for insurance cover, and even then there is the fine print which they are less than candid about with you. Any reputable company will not employ such tactics to dupe their clients and if they will not offer insurance from your request for a quote opting rather to sell it to you at the last minute, that should be a reason to avoid them.
Check the cost of having a second driver. If for example you will travel with someone who you expect to drive the rental car once in a while, car rental companies will typically slap a second driver premium of between 7 to 12 dollars, which is reasonable but anything more than 15 dollars is definitely a rip-off. Today, many well respected car rental companies allow a spouse to drive the rental car as long as they possess a valid drivers license and are above the age of 25.
